Abstract

Abstract: The article examines the complex relationship between Foucault and the social sciences. Against the two dominant interpretations of his work, it argues that Foucauldian genealogy entails a deeper break with the very idea of the “social” as an autonomous domain of reality, irreducible to either a critique of the knowledge–power nexus or a set of analytical tools. Through a comparison with Weber, Thompson, and Castel, it highlights divergences and interactions between sociology and genealogy.
