Abstract: The article critically rereads the tensions in Bourdieu’s sociology of the state. The first part addresses the shift from legitimacy to legitimation and shows how the primacy of unveiling makes it difficult to think the welfare state beyond the logic of domination. The second part examines Bourdieu’s sociolinguistics, challenging the idea of official language as a state artefact and foregrounding the vernacular to rethink the relation between state and political society.
