Nei Men’s Studies si è affermato da tempo un approccio performativo che guarda alle maschilità come a configurazioni di pratiche che rendono i soggetti riconoscibili e assegnabili ad una certa categoria di genere e ad una certa posizione di potere all’interno di relazioni intra-genere (tra diverse maschilità) e inter-genere (tra maschilità e femminilità) (cfr. Connell, Messerschmidt 2005). Questa prospettiva attribuisce quindi molta rilevanza alle pratiche adottate, la cui ripetizione costruisce come effetto un’illusione di sostanzialità del genere: attraverso tali pratiche ‘si fa l’uomo’.
